RealSelf, one of the largest online consumer review and information forums for plastic surgery, recently released its list of plastic surgery procedures receiving the most Internet search interest for 2012. This list is based on data compiled from approximately 52 million searches on the RealSelf website during the 2012 calendar year. Several procedures appear to have increased in popularity significantly over the past year. According to RealSelf, the following procedures enjoyed the largest increase in search traffic compared to 2011:
- Cellulaze™ – Cellulze is a new laser treatment used to reduce cellulite that received FDA approval in 2011. It garnered more than 1.25 million searches on the RealSelf website this year, accounting for a 32% increase from 2011. It is possible that this large surge in interest for Cellulaze is due in part to the fact that it is a brand new procedure that people are first hearing about now.
- Buttock Augmentation – Buttock augmentation dropped a spot from last year when it enjoyed the largest surge in search traffic of any procedure (39% increase from 2010). However, it remains in second place, enjoying a 28% increase in search traffic from 2011. The most commonly searched buttock augmentation method is the Brazilian Butt Lift, which uses liposuction to removed fat from other regions of the body and inserts it into the buttocks to create a fuller contour.
- Labiaplasty – Labiaplasty enjoyed the third highest increase in search traffic, up 22% from 2011 totals. This procedure is performed to improve the appearance of the labia.
While these three procedures generated the largest increase in search volume compared with 2011, they were not the most heavily searched plastic surgery procedures on the RealSelf website. The top 10 most heavily searched procedures for 2012 were:
- Tummy tuck
- Breast implants
- Breast augmentation
- Brazilian Butt Lift
- BOTOX® Cosmetic
- CoolSculpting® liposuction
- Breast reduction
