Reviving Youthful Skin with Botox

Millions of people in the U.S. receive Botox injections every year in order to help reduce the appearance of frown lines, furrows, wrinkles, and crows feet. Now new research has revealed a new benefit of Botox injections. The study which was recently published showed that injections may actually boost skin elasticity and collagen production.

The study which was conducted by Dr. James Bonaparte of the University of Ottawa, and Dr. David Ellis, of the University of Toronto, studied the effects on onabotulinum toxin A on the skin of 48 women, averaging 55 years of age who had never received Botox injections prior to the study.

The findings displayed an increase in pliability and elastic recoil in the facial skin. The change in composition that was seen mimicked that of more youthful skin. This effect was comparable to what one would see with radiofrequency skin tightening.

The team who conducted the study will next investigate whether or not extended Botox use has long-term benefits for the face and to determine and quantify the histologic changes that have been observed.
