How is gynecomastia surgery performed?
Gynecomastia correction is usually performed using a liposuction technique. Through a small incision at the areolar margin a narrow tube or cannula is introduced and gradual suctioning of the breast tissue is accomplished. In some patients the breast tissue is quite firm and a direct excision of tissue through an incision at the aerolar margin is required. In an occasional patient who has extremely redundant or sagging skin a skin excision is required.
How long does gynecomastia surgery take?
Length of surgery depends on the extent of the individual procedure but typically takes approximately two hours.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Usually a general anesthetic is utilized, however the procedure can be performed in some cases under local anesthesia with IV sedation.
How much pain is there?
Gynecomastia surgery is usually associated with only mild to moderate pain. This subsides after several days to a week and is well controlled with oral pain medications.
What is the recovery like?
After the surgery a compression vest is placed and worn for a period of two to three weeks. This helps to reduce swelling. If an open approach is performed small drains may be placed which are removed after three to five days. Stitches are dissolvable. A variable degree of swelling and bruising is expected which usually resolves after two weeks. Most men are able to return to regular activities and work after about a week.
Is a hospital stay required?
Male breast reduction surgery usually is performed on an outpatient basis and does not require an overnight stay.
What complications are associated with gynecomastia surgery?
Complications may include infection, bleeding, unfavorable scarring, nipple or chest skin numbness, skin or nipple retraction or irregularities, skin looseness as well as asymmetry. Although possible, significant complications are uncommon.
