In general, the best candidate for liposuction is a person who is in good health, is close to his or her ideal weight, and has one or more areas of localized body fat deposits out of proportion to the rest of their body which have been poorly responsive to diet and exercise. Liposuction is best suited for areas with good, firm skin tone without a lot of laxity.

Age is also a factor in liposuction candidacy, since skin elasticity decreases with age. As a result, older patients may not achieve the same results as younger patients. Certain diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, or poor circulation may place you at greater risk of complications associated with your liposuction procedure.

If the skin on the abdomen hangs loose and has stretch marks, liposuction of this area is not recommended because it will result in more loose skin and will not help the stretch marks. In this situation, a tummy tuck would be a better solution. Similarly, if the arms or inner thighs are associated with poor tome and excessive loose or sagging skin, an arm lift or thigh lift may be more appropriate than liposuction.
