What Type of Anesthesia is
Used for Liposuction?
Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Also serving West Chester, Newton Square, and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
Three types of anesthesia are used with liposuction. These include local anesthesia with sedation, epidural anesthesia and general anesthesia. The method used depends on the extent of the procedure and also on patient preference.
Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. David Bottger will generally recommend local anesthesia with sedation for smaller liposuction procedures. General anesthesia or epidural anesthesia is commonly used in conjunction with more extensive procedures. Although liposuction can be performed in a physician’s office under local anesthesia, only this approach can potentially be poorly tolerated. Performing the procedure in the hospital or certified outpatient surgery center allows the use of intravenous sedation which significantly increases patient comfort.
