What is a facelift?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess fat and sagging skin and tightens muscles in the neck and lower two-thirds of the face.  The result is a less-wrinkled, more firm and youthful appearance.  It is usually performed on people from their early 40’s to late 70’s.  Various procedure modifications such as using shorter incisions (“S-lifts or MACS lift”) or use of an endoscope are utilized depending on the individual patient's needs.  The goal is a customized procedure that creates a natural rejuvenated appearance without an excessively “pulled” or “stretched” look.

How long does a face lift last?

While a facelift does not stop aging, many patients never feel the need for another surgery.  Others choose to have another facelift in seven to ten years following their first one.  Having a second facelift is a decision that can only be made after a thorough discussion with Dr. Bottger. If you take good care of your skin and protect it from sun damage, your facelift will last longer.

How long will it take to recover from a facelift?

A facelift involves a varying amount of swelling and bruising. Each patient heal differently and at a different pace. Within two weeks the bruising has usually resolved to the point where it is possible to return to work and social situations.  Final scar appearance takes a number of months.  Make up may be used during the healing phase to improve the appearance of scars or cover up early bruising.

What are the risks or complications of facelift?

As with any surgery, there is some risk involved with a facelift.  Risks include unfavorable scarring, infections, hematoma, skin necrosis, and nerve injury resulting in facial weakness.  Significant complications, although possible, are uncommon.  It is very important that smokers refrain from smoking for four to six weeks before and after the procedure to reduce the likelihood of wound healing complications.

Can I have other facial procedures at the same time?

Yes, many patients choose to have other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as a brow lift, eyelid surgery, or neck liposuction in conjunction with their facelift.  Based on your ultimate goals, your physical health, and the look you wish to achieve, Dr. Bottger will help you decide which procedures, if any, should be performed with your facelift.

Who is the ideal candidate for a facelift?

Ideal candidates for facelift are people between the ages of 40 and 70 without significant medical conditions who have realistic expectations.  Conditions that may be improved include:

  • Patients who have developed “jowls” which impair a well-defined jaw line and create a square-appearing lower face.
  • Patients with sagging skin in the midface or cheek region creating a “hollow” eye or more skeletonized appearance.
  • Patients with loose, wrinkled or sagging skin in the neck region with a “turkey gobbler’ appearance.
  • Patients with deep lines and folds from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth (nasolabial folds).

How much pain is there?

Facelift is associated with some pain but is usually not excessive.  Mostly, there is a feeling of tightness and numbness, which gradually dissolves over the first several weeks.

Will I need to stay in the hospital?

A facelift can be performed in the hospital with an overnight stay or in the outpatient surgery center.  It can be performed under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia and IV sedation.  Depending on the extent and length of the case, an overnight stay in the hospital may be recommended.
