Will I have Scars from
Blepharoplasty?
Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Also serving West Chester, Newton Square, and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania
All surgery produces some scarring. The scars from blepharoplasty are usually minimal, heal well, and are ultimately well concealed. Proper placement of your incisions is crucial to minimizing scar visibility after surgery. Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. David Bottger places the incisions within the eyelid crease to ensure less scar visibility.
It is important to remember that immediately following surgery, you may experience significant swelling and bruising. You may also experience some red coloration around your eyes. This color will go through a fading process over time – first becoming a muddy purple color and then a yellowish tint before disappearing completely. This is completely natural and should be expected as part of the healing process.
All patients heal at different rates. Generally, people with thin or sun-damaged skin heal faster than people with thicker skin, such as those of Asian descent. Lifestyle factors such as smoking will also impact your rate of healing.
While most of the bruising will subside within two weeks, it may take up to 4-6 months for your eyes to completely heal. At this point, your scarring should be minimal and barely noticeable to others.
