Where will my surgery be performed?
Otoplasty is typically performed in the out patient surgery center setting. It can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on patient preferenceIs there scarring after ear surgery?
The incision for otoplasty is made in the crease behind the ear. The final scars are typically thin and flat and, because of the placement, very well hidden and not readily noticeable.
At what age can a child have an otoplasty?
Otoplasty should not be performed until the ear is fully developed, usually by age five or six. Teasing by peers and the resultant detrimental effect on self esteem usually precedes parental interest in exploring this procedure.
What is the cost of otoplasty?
The cost for the otoplasty procedure is in the range of $6000. This includes the surgical fee, anesthesia fee, and operating room fee in addition to all the post operative follow up care.
Is otoplasty covered by insurance?
Otoplasty is an elective cosmetic procedure and, therefore, not covered by health insurance plans. Our office does work with a number of finance companies which many patients use to cover all or a portion of the procedure.
How long is the recovery period following ear surgery?
Immediately after surgery a head dressing is placed which is removed usually the day after surgery. Showering over the incisions is then permitted. Subsequent to this a head band is worn for approximately one week at all times and then only at night for six weeks. It is important to avoid strenuous activity for the first two weeks following the procedure. Lighter exercise may begin after this and more strenuous exercise and sports after four weeks.
What are the risks with otoplasty surgery?
As with any surgical procedure, certain complications can occur with surgery to correct prominent ears. These include infection, bleeding or hematoma, unfavorable scarring, numbness, asymmetry and unfavorable shape. Fortunately, severe complications are uncommon.
