Does My Nipple Have To Be Removed
For Breast Reduction Surgery?

Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Also serving West Chester, Newton Square, and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania

Occasionally during a breast reduction procedure, usually involving extreme breast size, a technique is employed requiring removal of the nipple to reposition it. In most cases, however, the nipple is left attached to a mound of underlying breast tissue. An appropriate amount of tissue and surrounding skin is removed, the nipple is raised to a higher position, and the skin envelope is tightened and closed around it.

The ability to breast feed is generally preserved as long as the nipple does not have to be completely removed during surgery. As long as your milk ducts remain attached, you should have the potential to breast feed in the future. This may, however, vary depending on the extent of the procedure performed. If you are planning on having children at a later date and would like to breast feed, you should discuss this with Dr. Bottger before deciding whether to have breast reduction.
