Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation, also known as breast implants or enhancement is a procedure that alters a woman’s breast size or shape. There are several types of breast implants used in cosmetic procedures however; the two most common types of breast implants are

  • Saline implants which are made of a saline liquid in a silicone shell
  • Silicone-gel implants which are made of a viscous silicone-gel in a silicone shell.

There are also several methods in which implants can be inserted into the breasts however; there are two common types of inserting implants such as:

  • Inserting the implants around the edge of the nipple over the muscles
  • Inserting the implants under the breasts or near the armpits under the muscles

Breast Augmentation is the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States. Women who decide to receive a Breast augmentation procedure have many reasons for their choice which include:

  • A woman’s breasts may be different sizes
  • A woman’s breasts can get smaller with age or after having children
  • A woman’s breasts is not proportional to the rest of her body
  • A woman’s breasts may sag
  • A woman may feel that she can’t find clothes that fit right over the breasts

Breastfeeding

Most women who decide to have a Breast Augmentation procedure have thought through all of the positive and negative aspects of implants. A common concern among women who have received or are considering a Breast Augmentation Procedure is the possibility of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is a healthy way to bond with a young child and a fast method for the mother to lose weight after a child is first born. For these reasons and others, women typically choose to breastfeed at least for the first leg of their child’s life. Because Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure, there are risks of damaging nerves or milk ducts in the breasts. If either is damaged many complications can arise such as:

  • More or less sensitivity or numbness of the nipples
  • More extreme breast engorgement that is accompanied by severe cases of pain, fever and chills
  • Less chance of producing an adequate milk supply to fulfill the child’s needs

Like any medical procedure, there are risks that are associated with Breast Augmentation procedures however; by obtaining good medical care and expressing your desire to eventually breastfeed, a physician can help to determine the right procedure for you to help accommodate for future possibilities of breastfeeding.
