Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation, also known as breast implants or enhancement is a procedure that alters a woman’s breast size or shape. There are several types of breast implants used in cosmetic procedures however; the two most common types of breast implants are

  • Saline implants which are made of a saline liquid in a silicone shell
  • Silicone-gel implants which are made of a viscous silicone-gel in a silicone shell.

There are also several methods in which implants can be inserted into the breasts however; there are two common types of inserting implants such as:

  • Inserting the implants around the edge of the nipple over the muscles
  • Inserting the implants under the breasts or near the armpits under the muscles

Breast Augmentation is the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States. Women who decide to receive a Breast augmentation procedure have many reasons for their choice which include:

  • A woman’s breasts may be different sizes
  • A woman’s breasts can get smaller with age or after having children
  • A woman’s breasts is not proportional to the rest of her body
  • A woman’s breasts may sag
  • A woman may feel that she can’t find clothes that fit right over the breasts

Breastfeeding

A common concern among women who have received or are considering a breast augmentation procedure is whether or not the implants will interfere with breast feeding. Breast feeding is the healthiest option for the child, a great form of bonding and has added benefits for weight loss for the mother after the birth of the child. Many women choose to breast feed and a breast augmentation should not alter the ability of a woman to do so. Breast implants are placed in the plane directly under the breast tissue(submammary approach) or more commonly under the chest wall muscle (subpectoral approach). The presence of the implant does not interfere with the connection of ductal tissue to the nipple. Where the incision is made should in general also not interfere with the ductal connections to the nipple, although certain periareolar techniques could have some partial adverse effects.
